Positive Reinforcement or R+ training has changed a lot since it first hit mainstream dog training in the 90’s.  As a busy person who constantly strives to not only use positive training methods with my dogs, but also produce behaviours that are precise enough and consistent enough to achieve my goals with my dogs, I need to be really intentional with my dog training choices. I need to understand how to split behaviours down to the smallest components, how to best train those components separately from each other, and how to maximize the impact of each training session so that I can get there in less time. I also need to know how to take the final step of taking all the small pieces of behaviour I said I needed and put them back together into a seamless performance.

This series of seminars digs into exactly that territory. In a combination of seminar/demo and working formats, we will embark on an exploration of positive reinforcement training theory that is sure to be thought provoking and add information to your dog training tool kit.

Foundations in R+ Training, CERs and Training Loops

Schedule:

Thursday, April 11

6:30-8:30pm

(no working spots this session)

Being a dog trainer who strives to use positive reinforcement (R+) methods means I have to be really intentional in my training and rethink all the behaivours I train from the ground up. We used to talk about training as either using operant conditioning or classical conditioning. Today, dog training science rejects this dichotomy and embraces the reality that both types of learning are always present alongside one another.  Looking more closely we can take advantage of this. Paying attention to a dog’s Conditioned Emotional Response (CER) allows us to impact a dog’s emotional state in both operant and classical ways.

Utilizing training loops pushes our training and brings next level success for our dogs because when using these well designed loops, the rate of reinforcement is high and the dogs know when the reinforcer is coming. Both of these decrease frustration (which impacts the CER) and also the time required to train a new behaviour. Win-win.

Reinforcement as Behaviour

Schedule:

Friday, April 26

6:30-8:30pm

This will be a working seminar where we look more in-depth at how reinforce our dogs. If we want to have really tight training loops, then we need our reinforcement behaviours to be as fluent as possible. It is likely that you already have a variety of reinforcement behaviours in your repertoire, but perhaps you are not making use of them to your full advantage. If we can increases their fluency allows us and our dogs to focus more on the behaviour you are actually working on in that session rather than on behaviours that are part of the reinforcement. For example, training cues that mean “come to me to get your food reward”, vs. “go and find a tossed food reward” can be helpful. In different instances one over the other might best support the dog to be in the position to repeat that behaviour again more quickly.

If you want to learn a little more about the science of using different reward cues and behaviours and why you might want to consider adding them into your training repertoire, this seminar is for you.

This session has 6 working spots that can be filled by dogs with the following prerequisites:

• The handlers signed up and attended all three sessions

• The handlers have a working knowledge of “clicker” training (i.e., Branching out, Advanced Agility, Tricks or permission of the instructor)

• The dogs can wait quietly on a crate or a mat for their turns.

Planning & Structuring in Action

Schedule:

Thursday, May 16

6:30-8:30pm

This will be a working seminar where we look more in-depth at the application of the principals we have learned in terms of how we will plan and structure our training. We will use examples from everyday “life” as well as performance sport examples from agility and competitive obedience.

This session has 6 working spots that can be filled by dogs with the following prerequisites:

• The handlers signed up and attended all three sessions

• The handlers have a working knowledge of “clicker” training (i.e., Branching out, Advanced Agility, Tricks or permission of the instructor)
